Sensing gravity?

If the 3-space sensor was to sense gravitational effects towards the centre of the earth and read them in high enough detail, wouldn't it be a good replacement for a GPS system?

Thoughts?

If I'm not mistaken, accelerometers inherently detect gravity. You would have to calibrate it at rest to accurately detect it, or a round-about value in order to approximate the effect of gravity on the device. Anyone, please correct me if I am in error. :)

Yes.  Constant readouts in the Y value are seen in the accelerometer of the YEI sensors.  Its very annoying. I want to sense motion not constant forces like this.
